North
Conway Community Center
History
The
North Conway Community Center is a
non-profit recreation organization, which
began serving our community in 1948 in the
old Carroll Reed Building and moved to its
present location (here) in 1950. Harvey
Dow Gibson donated the land the building
sits on and the Gibson’s heirs donated the
playground area in 1972. The Board, with
Kim Perkins at the helm, purchased the
property behind the building and Mud Bowl
area formally known as the “Old Corral” in
1976 for $65,000. The Center’s property is
owned and run by a volunteer Board of
Directors who give the land back to the
community as a safe recreation area for all
to use which includes: a “family friendly”
playground, spray ground and basketball
court. The advantage for the Center to
remain a non-profit is that we are eligible
for grants (over $90,000 in the last 3
years) and donations. The Center fundraises
over $100,000 per year to operate so
taxpayers are receiving more then twice
their tax dollar. The Center asks the
citizens of Conway to support the Center
with a warrant article in the spring
election.
The
Center runs many youth athletic programs in
North Conway such as: soccer for grades K-6,
flag football & field hockey for grade 3-6,
basketball for grades 3-6, cheering for
grades 5-6, T-ball for grades K-3, softball
for grades 3-6 and runs a fun filled summer
day camp. The Center also works with over
25 local organizations and is the sponsor
for the Retired Senior Volunteer Program and
the Boy Scouts of America. The Center is a
vital part of the North Conway Village.
